GUSTAVE LOISEAU

BIOGRAPHY
Born in Paris in 1865, Gustave Loiseau studied briefly at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs but was primarily self-taught.  In the tradition of such artists as Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley, Loiseau enjoyed painting directly from nature.  He met Paul Gaugin at Pont-Aven in 1894, and he exhibited regularly in such shows as the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1893 and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1895.  It was at the latter that Loiseau met Parisian art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who was to represent him for the rest of his life.

Throughout his career, Gustave Loiseau traveled extensively in France with his friends and fellow artists, Henry Moret and Maxime Maufra.  He visited Pointoise frequently, and spent the last years of his life there.
