ISIDORE ALEXANDRE AUGUSTIN PILS

French, 1813–1875

Isidore Pils

BIOGRAPHY
'Isidore Pils studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Lethière and Picot, and won the Prix de Rome in 1838. Pils first worked as a painter of religious subjects but produced works that while accurate were rather uninspired. It was the Crimean War, which he followed at first-hand, that provided him with the opportunity to pursue his true vocation by becoming a military artist, a field in which he achieved great success. By 1848 he had already shown his ability with The Crossing of the Beresina and in 1849 with Rouget de Lisle Singing the Marseillaise for the First Time. Napoleon III commissioned a number of paintings from Pils and he painted various works at St-Clotilde and St-Eustache. Pils was also responsible for the ceiling over the stairway at the Nouvel Opéra. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1846 to 1875 and became a teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts on 10 December 1863. He was appointed as a jury member for the Salons of 1864, 1865, 1866, 1867 (Exposition Universelle) and 1868. He was awarded a silver medal in 1846, 1855 and 1857 and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur on 16 August 1857. In 1861 he received the grand medal of honour and a gold medal in 1867 at the Exposition Universelle. Pils was promoted to officer of the Légion d'Honneur on 1 July 1867 and became a member of the Institute in 1868.' (Benezit, Dictionary of Artists, Gründ, 2006).
