BIOGRAPHY
Algernon Talmage was born in Fyfield, Oxfordshire. He was both an etcher and an Impressionist painter. After living and painting alongside his contemporaries in St. Ives, Cornwall, where he ran an art school from 1900, Talmage moved to London and settled in Chelsea in 1907. He had his first one-man show at the Goupil Gallery in 1909. He won medals at the Pittsburgh International Exhibition as well as the Paris Salon. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1929 and a full Academician seven years later. Talmage’s students included Emily Carr, whom he taught in St. Ives, and the Australian painter Will Ashton.
