Carl Ferdinand Sohn was an important painter of portraits and historical subjects who began his studies at the Berlin Academy of Art. Sohn travelled to Holland and, in 1830, made a formative trip to Italy. The artist’s son, Carl Rudolph Sohn (1845–1908) was also a successful painter.
