Straits of Dover
Watercolor and bodycolor on paper
8¾ x 12¼ inches (22.3 x 31 cm)
In this work the artist loosely follows the composition of J.M.W. Turner’s watercolor Straits of Dover [untraced], probably known to Bentley from the engraving after Turner by William Miller of 1828. An early owner of the present watercolor was the 19th century marine painter, Sir Oswald Walters Brierly.
