This work, executed in pastel (an unusual medium for the artist), was made as part of a revival by Detaille of Napoleonic subjects, particularly First Empire cavalry, made in preparation for his book, Cavaliers de Napoléon, published in 1895. We are grateful to François Robichon, President of the Association des Amis d’Edouard Detaille, for his assistance in the cataloguing of this work.
