EUGÈNE GALIEN-LALOUE
French, 1854-1941
BIOGRAPHY
Eugène Galien-Laloue was born in Montmartre in 1854. After serving during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, Galien-Laloue began a career as an artist. He studied with his father, painter and theater set designer Charles Laloue, and with Léon Germain Pelouse of the Barbizon School. The artist's first exhibit was at the Musée de Reims in 1876. He began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1879, specializing in views of the grand boulevards of Belle Époque Paris. In addition, Galien-Laloue painted landscapes in Normandy, Seine-et-Marne, Marseille and Italy. During World War I, Galien-Laloue worked as a ‘war artist’ depicting soldiers on the battlefield. He continued to paint until 1940 and died at his daughter’s house in Chérence, Val-d’Oise in 1941.
The artist was prolific enough using his own name Eugène Galien-Laloue; however, in addition, he painted under several pseudonyms including Louis Dupuy, Liévin and Eugène Galiany.
