Henry Koehler illustrated an article for Sports Illustrated about the Southern California Yachting Association Regatta in San Diego in 1959. The subject of the present work is described alongside the illustration in the magazine as: "Regatta flags flying above the odd gray shapes of a wind gauge and a loudspeaker at the Mission Bay Yacht Club signal the opening day of the Pacific Coast and Southern California Yachting associations’ race meet." A watercolor illustrated in the same Sports Illustrated article was admired by Jackie Kennedy who acquired it from the artist as a gift for the soon to be President-Elect John F. Kennedy.
