BIOGRAPHY
Luis Graner y Arrufi was born in Barcelona and received his formal training at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in that city, studying with Benito Marcadé. From 1886 until 1891 the artist trained in Paris and went on to exhibit regularly at the Paris Salon from 1895 until 1910.
Graner traveled to the United States in 1910 and worked in New York, California, New Orleans and also in South America. He exhibited at the Copley Society in Boston in 1917, which was a showcase for Boston painters at the turn-of-the-century, including artists such as Frank Benson and Edmund Tarbell. He also exhibited a portrait at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1923. In October 1924 Graner had a one-man show at the Ainslie Galleries in New York. Several of his works are included in the Laura Simon Nelson Collection, which is part of the Historic New Orleans Collection.
Graner was awarded medals at exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Paris, and other cities. He won the coveted Prix de Rome and, in 1904, became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in France.
