RUBENS SANTORO
Italian, 1859-1942
BIOGRAPHY
Rubens Santoro was born in Mongrassano in the Calabria region of Italy, the son of the painter Giovanni Battista Santoro (1809-1895). The family moved to Naples, where Rubens Santoro became a pupil of Domenico Morelli (1823-1901) at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Santoro exhibited widely, at the Esposizione Nazionale de Belle Arti, Turin; at the Paris Salon; the World’s Columbian Exhibition, Chicago; and regularly in Venice, Rome, Barcelona and London.
The artist’s earlier subjects included views in Capri and along the Amalfi coast, many of which were sold through the Goupil Gallery in Paris. Later in his career, Santoro spent extended periods of time in Venice, which was to become his favored subject.
