BIOGRAPHY
John Frederick Herring was a painter who focused mainly on portraits, genre scenes, sporting subjects, horse racing scenes, and animals. He started out as a carriage painter and then became a coachman. He devoted the entirety of his free time to art and was taught by Abraham Cooper. Initially the subjects of his works were isolated almost completely to racehorses but as his career continued on he diversified his collection to include other subjects. His work became well known and he painted for Queen Victoria, the Duke of Orleans and George IV. His art is extremely detailed and realistic, creating powerful images. Few artists have been able to surpass his ability to portray horses.
He has exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, the Suffolk Street Gallery and the British Institution from 1818 to 1865. His works have appeared in many museums and galleries including those in Blackburn, Dublin, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Melbourne, Reading, and Salford.
