We're thrilled to announce that one of our cherished works, "The Daughters of Rafael Errázuriz" by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, is part of the exhibition "Spanish Light: Sorolla in American Collections" at the Meadows Museum in Dallas.
A Luminous Journey Through Time
Sorolla, born in 1863, was renowned for capturing the vitality and luminescence of everyday scenes, and this exceptional oil on canvas is no exception. Painted in Madrid in 1897, the artwork measures a substantial 89½ x 54¾ inches and depicts the three eldest daughters of Rafael Errázuriz Urmeneta, a Chilean diplomat and politician. Ingeniously, Sorolla included a cameo self-portrait in a mirror—a nod to Velázquez's masterpiece, Las Meninas, a painting the artist admired. The mirror in question and its console can be visited at the Museo Sorolla in Madrid. If you're intrigued, you can discover more about this painting on the Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida page of our website.
An Artistic Lineage Celebrated
2023 is not just another year; it marks the centennial of Sorolla's passing. To honor this significant milestone, the Spanish government has declared it the "year of Sorolla." We are honored to contribute to this lasting legacy by lending this exceptional work for exhibition at the Meadows Museum, an event curated by Sorolla’s own great-granddaughter, Blanca Pons-Sorolla.
